How does Fenofibrate work?
Fenofibrate is a fibric acid derivative drug that is frequently used in the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia. It shows its effect by stimulating the Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptor (PPAR) α (1,3).
Fibrate or statin?
The benefits of fibrates are not limited to reducing triglyceride levels only. This group of drugs also provides a slight increase in HDL cholesterol. Although not as much as statins, it can slightly lower LDL cholesterol. The effects of fibrates on LDL cholesterol may be more important than reducing the amount.
