Turkish literature is a rich part of Turkish culture and has been influenced by different periods throughout history. Turkish literature covers works written in a wide geography and in different languages. It can be said that Turkish literature has been divided into different periods throughout history and each period has its own literary style.
Historical Development of Turkish Literature
Turkish literature begins with the written literary tradition of the Turkish tribes in Central Asia. Old Turkish literature was shaped during the Gokturks and Uyghurs period. The works written in this period generally consist of epics and stories in verse.
After the adoption of Islam, Turkish literature gained a different dimension by interacting with Islamic culture. During this period, the genre of poetry called divan literature developed, and many famous poets produced works in this period.
Ottoman period Turkish literature was enriched with folk literature and masnavis as well as divan literature. Important names of modern Turkish literature, such as Nâzım Hikmet, were also educated during the Ottoman period.
20. In the 19th century, Turkish literature entered a new era by being influenced by western literary movements. During this period, important works were produced in genres such as novel writing, storytelling and essayism.
