When and why was the Surname Law enacted?
The Surname Law was enacted on 21 June 1934 in order for the citizens of the Republic of Turkey to acquire surnames. The Christian and Jewish population, who were citizens of the Republic of Turkey, already had surnames and these surnames were known by the people in the region where they lived.
